thanks =)
If you’re willing to limit yourself to one area, you could check into Bus About tours or Contiki – they’re group tours.
Personally I don’t like tours though. I’ve travelled to China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. Most recently I went to Italy and France by myself for 19 days. If you travel via hostel, you’ll be guaranteed to meet new people to hang out with each night. Everyone at those locations seem to have good vibes and you’ll get along great. If you’re in super-touristy destinations you can also randomly meet people there. E.g. At the Louvre in Paris I met a girl standing in line in front of me and we ended up hanging out all day. Or, in Chiang Mai Thailand, our cooking instructor got us a deal on renting a driver and car to go to Doi Ithanop mountain.
It can be really intimidating to travel by yourself though. In Asia I was always in a group and I was thankful for it. It was scary sometimes when peddlers or taxi drivers followed you around for 10 minutes trying to badger you into using their services, even though you said no 15 times already. I did feel safer in Europe just because at least I was able to blend in, but I liked Europe a lot less.
However, in each country and each city you can always find a tour group offering something in English, so you can meet people that way. Asia is definitely an awesome place to go if you’re young because it’s so ridiculously cheap. I was in Thailand for 10 days and spent less than $300 (that included railway/buses, hostels, food, souvenirs, etc.).
As for the person who recommended against Thailand, don’t listen to them. Yes, it is super touristy, but if you avoid the South (where all the beaches and resorts are) you can get an authentic taste of the country. I suggest going North to Sukhothai and Chiang Mai. (Chiang Mai was my favourite city in Thailand.)
