Can anyone advise if it’s safe for a woman to backpack through Cambodia & Viet Nam alone?

My friend may have to bail on our Southeast Asia backing packing trip from Hanoi to Siem Reap. While it’s advised that women should use caution at night, are there any other issues or concerns for a woman traveling alone? Are we easier targets for traveling and tour scams? If not those countries, any that are better. Thailand has been thrown about…

Enough horror stories from people who haven’t left their own hometowns! I have never been to Cambodia, I live in Vietnam.
First of all, as an American woman , you probably outweigh the average Vietnamese male by 15 kilos. You could definitely kick their butt if you wanted. However, most Viet males will be too shy to talk to you.
Secondly, the Viets are EXTREMELY friendly people. They might steal from you (they figure that you’re from America, you’re a millionaire and can afford it), but they would never harm you.
Thirdly, use caution at night. The Vietnamese are THE WORLD’S WORST DRIVERS!!! (I’m a former Marine and I’ve been to over 50 countries) It must be a genetic thing. Carry a lantern or reflector if you are walking down an unlit street at night. Even then, it is advisable to walk against the direction of traffic so you can dodge the people who inadvertently want to kill you by being such p i s s poor drivers. lol

As the poster above pointed out, you’re much more likely to come to harm in America than Viet Nam.
