International Travel Tours For Students
Are my backpacking trip plans feasible? see details…?
I plan to go around 1.5 months total. I’ll start in London for around 5 days, then fly(easyjet) to Munich(to get to Garmisch, where Edelwiess Lodge&resort is) for around 1.5 weeks. They have daily tours and many activities for decent prices. Then start my 1-month Eurorail pass–>Venice, Florence, Rome, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Lauterbrunnen, Paris, Antwerpen, Amsterdam, Heidelberg, Salzburg, Vienna, Tyrol, then back to Munich to fly back into London. I’ll depart London within a few days to go back to states. So, this way I get 45 days off a 30-day pass. I plan to camp/hostels, pack snacks, sandwitches, have student international ID, military ID to get on posts. I am hoping I can get this in $3,000(excluding flight there). Does my plan and budget seem feasible??? Any tips? Do many women travel alone just fine? Thanks!!
I plan to go late May to early July 2008.
This does not seem feasible. Sorry. : (
At the current exchange rate, this is less than 1900 euros to get you through six weeks, without even including the cost of your Eurail pass. FYI about Eurail: you have to pay an extra supplement to get on most trains, too, so that can add up. Eight days of just sleeping and eating inexpensively in London runs roughly $500-550 as it is. Public transportation within London will be at least another hundred bucks.
Germany is notoriously the cheapest country to travel in and most Berlin hostels are now going for €19 ($30.50) a night. In Amsterdam, I stayed in the cheapest 30-bed dorm I could find and in the off-off-season, and that same bed now costs over $38 a night with the current exchange rate. France, Italy, and Belgium are even more expensive.
A camp site in Germany will still cost you around €15 ($24) and members of different German hiking organizations have priority, so in the high season, it may be impossible for you to even find a camp site.
Safety-wise, it’s fine to go most places alone, as a woman. Just stay aware of your belongings and talk to the other travelers you meet. They’ll be able to recommend other cheap places to go and also give you the heads-up on safety in different areas.
ISIC really only works as cheap travel insurance and something to show the nice people at the museum entrance who think that your US ID looks fake. Your military ID is also meaningless outside of the Edelweiss.
An old traveler’s maxim: take half the belongings you think you’ll need and twice the money.
