What vaccinations are “really” needed for South Africa??

Hello…. my husband and I are planning a safari/tour to South Africa in May 2008 and are researching what vaccinations are truly necessary. We’re travelling with a tour company called SmarTours and they feel that the malaria pills are the only thing needed. When researching, we see that some recommend Hepatits A/B, Thyphoid, malaria, etc. The tour company is preparing our foods through the hotels/lodges in which we’re staying in the concerning areas. Our route is flying into CapeTown, and going home out of Johannesburg. Some of the visitied cities are swaiziland, kruger national park, zimbabwe, zululand, victoria falls… we plan to be there for about 18 days. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. We almost cancelled due to our concerns of vaccines as we really don’t want to do more then is really necessary. Thank you for any help in this regard! :)

You don’t really need anything else besides the malaria pills. I am from Denmark and my husband South African. The first time I came to South Africa I got all kinds of vaccinations, but since then, and now that I live here, all I do is take malaria pills if I go to the areas where it is recommended.

From your itinerary and seeing that you are staying in hotels and lodges it is unlikely that you will come into contact with any other diseases. I agree with your tour company, malaria pills is the only thing needed.

If you are nervous and it makes you sleep better at night, get the other shots too, but it is not necessary.
