What is Delta Airline’s policy on traveling with a guitar?

I’ll be going to Florida for my Senior class trip. Unfortunately, our class got split into two groups, and now I’m in the group taking Delta Airlines.
I’ve already called the Airline’s customer service to ask, and they said it counted as a carry-on. I don’t think the person I asked understood the specifics, but they did say it was a carry-on.
I’ve been doing some research and have found many, many stories on how Delta tends to hassle musicians, and even denies them the right to bring their instruments on board with them, even after showing them the AFM Carry-On letter (http://www.indie-music.com/downloads/AFM_carryon.pdf).
I’m not exactly sure what’s true or not, and I don’t know if I can even switch airplanes with the other group.

Guitars and other smaller musical instruments, such as violins, will be accepted as your free carry-on baggage on Delta operated flights1. These items must easily fit in the overhead compartment or approved stowage location in the cabin, on a space available basis at the time of boarding. If adequatespace is not available, the item must be checked.
