I am trying to plan a trip to Peru on my own instead of doing a guided tour package from a travel website. After arriving in Lima, what’s the best way to get around to the other cities (Cusco, Puno, etc.)? And, I keep reading some things about unofficial taxis … how do I make sure to find an official taxi at the airport in Lima to get to the hotel and then from the hotel to train/bus stations?
There are official taxis at the airport, just outside customs before you go out of the airport. Take that one, not an informal one. The best buses to travel around Peru are Ormeño (www.grupoormeno.com.pe) and Cruz del Sur (www.cruzdelsur.com.pe). If you buy a Lonely Planet guide and stick to those buses, you can easily travel around Peru. Try and not take informal taxis, the hotel can give you phone numbers from several companies in Lima (Taxi seguro, Taxi real, Taxi San Borja, Taxi Miraflores),
