Exlporing Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast in Italy…?

I would like to visit Rome, and take a guided tour or two, but would really like to see/explore the Amalfi Coast – Sorrento, Ravello, etc. – on my own. I’ve never been to Europe, but am planning a 7-9 day vacation. Is it easy to get from Rome to Sorrento/Amalfi via train or bus (not interested in renting a car – heard it is treacherous)? Any suggestions advice would be MOST appreciated. Thank you.

From Rome, you can easily reach Amalfi by train: you should change in Napoli and Salerno or just in Salerno (which is very near to Amalfi), according to schedule; or you can take a bus in Salerno for all resort on Amalfi coast.
