Ocho
Rios has an influx of shopping centres some have duty free of in-bond
stores and other stores that do not necessarily cater for tourists.
Prices are quoted in Jamaican or US dollars.
While shopping you will encounter many aggressive vendors. If you
are not interested in their wares just a firm
"No Thank You" and keep walking will settle the matter.
Shoppers who are in search of duty free bargains in products such
as French perfume, crystal, watches, cameras and electronic equipment
can walk the centres along Main Street and Dacosta Drive. The largest
being Tajmahal Shopping Centre (near the cruise shop terminal),
Ocean Village Shopping Center (in the centre of Ocho Rios), Pineapple
Place and Coconut Grove (just east of town).
Shopping for locally made items needs determination, discernment
and overall a good eye. There are five outdoor crafts market - The
Ocho Rios Craft Market on the Main Street, Olde Market Craft Shoppes
next to the Seow Supermarket, Pineapple Craft Circle at Pineapple
Place, and Coconut Grove Craft Market next to Coconut Grove Shopping
Centre and Fern Gully craft Centre at Fern Gully. The straw work,
wood carvings and leather goods are of good quality.
You can visit individual shops such as Irie Ceramics - 8 miles east
of Ocho Rios, just past Couples Hotel for pottery items and Seagull
Pewter in Ocho Rios for traditional wrought pewter. There are several
other studios where you can visit with the artists and at the same
time view their painting, sculpture, carvings and ceramic work.
For example, Wassi Art - famous island-wide for it's tastefully
decorated pottery. When you visit you are able to watch the whole
process of transforming a lump of Castleton clay to a thing of beauty.
This place bustles with activities by a group of self-taught artists.
The Harmony Hall Gallery which is located east of Ocho Rios is one
of the best in Jamaica. A Graciously restored stone-and-wood Victoria
Mansion exhibits the works of contemporary and local artists - Kapo,
David Boxer, Everald Brown and Judy MacMillan. Prices are marked
in either Jamaican or US dollars.
Best buys are Blue Mountain Coffee and world-famous Jamaican rums
from Appleton Estates and Edwin Charlie.
Colors (the one at the entrance to Soni's Plaza on Dacosta Drive)
have a walk-in humidor with a wide selection of Cuban and Jamaican
Cigars. Local spices and seasonings are a wonderful way to take
home a taste of Jamaica.
