jobs with 50 travel
What US based construction companies work in other countries?

I am looking for a job that will allow me to travel more often and for long lengths of time. I know a guy that travels to europe a few times a year to weld staircases. He does well for himself and that is his only source of income. I like the schedule that he has. He works well under 50% of the year and makes more money than i do, with years less of experience in the construction industry.

You’re talking about multi-national firms like Bechtel, Kiewit, and Fluor Corp…these are large multinational mining, energy, and infrastructure contractors with gross volume in the billions of dollars annualy….I can’t specifically tell you where to go…but you can go on Engineering News Record to get an idea of the 100 largest contractors in America….

I work for a large company like this but am settled down with wife and kids and stay near a US Air Force Base with a missile field…so we always have work around here retrofitting silo’s and working at the commercial spaceport.

The heaviest hitters are Bechtel, Kiewit, Fluor, Skanska, Turner, Perini, PCL, and even though their revenue is not huge Flatiron Inc. is a division of Hotcheif which is a German multinational firm.

The tough part of this is that if you are a craft hand…often times besides key leadmen and foremen…these firms pull labor from local sites…I worked on a job in the Phillipines in 1998 where we brought a handful of upper tier craft hands…but deferred to the local labor force for all the grunt work.

As far as getting on with one of these firms….visit their website…99% of them have a recruiting or “CAREERS” section on the header list of their website…it will take you through their open positions and where they are located……Most of these largest firms are union shops and if you want to be any sort of player, you’ll have to have a journeymen card to be taken seriously.

It depends on where you are located…most of the big firms are in Metro areas….Bechtel is in Frisco, Kiewit is in Omaha, and so on.

Draft up a resume and a project list and goto the recruiting pages…they will guide you through the process if there are openings….their is a big shortage of skilled, knowledgable top tier superintendents these days because kids coming into the work force either don’t want to work hard to learn skills so they go into soft labor like retail or whatever….or they go to college and immediatley want to be managers without solid experience.

If you have a few years of experience on large scale projects…make that known to any company you contact….of all the companies that you will have good luck regarding travel with….Bechtel is the best…..we work in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Europe, South America, Asia, Australia, and everywhere in between.

But you don’t get much of a life…you spend all your time on the road…sleep in hotels most of the time…and can spend years away from home. It is not for the faint at heart. But if you are young talented and without wife and kids….it;s a hell of an adventure.. that is for sure.
