The
second major tourist destination in Jamaica is the town of Ocho
Rios, in the Parish of St. Ann, which lies along the northern
coastline. Ocho Rios translated from spanish means "Eight
Rivers". The locals call it "Ochie".
It has evolved over the many years from a fishing and banana port
to a popular and thriving tourists resort. Ocho Rios boasts a
wide range of accommodation and shopping facilities, restaurants,
long stretch of excellent beaches ideal for swimming and sun-bathing,
translucent rivers, invigorating waterfalls.
There is a modern cruise ship pier that can accommodate up to
three cruise ships - each year about 350,000 cruise ship visitors
grace the shore of Ocho Rios.

There are interesting place worth seeing in the environs of Ocho
Rios - The Dunn's River Falls, Fern Gully, The Botanical Gardens,
the historic site of The Ocho Rios Fort - a 17th century structure
which has two original cannons. The Harmony Hall Gallery is a
20 minutes drive to the east of Ocho Rios - formerly a 1800's
Methodist Manse, now owned and operated since 1981 by Annabella
and Peter Proudlock and artist Graham Davis. This gallery has
regular exhibitions and leading Jamaican artists.
The Seville Great House is also 20 minutes drive to the west of
Ocho Rios - the site of Jamaica's first inhabitants, the Tainos
Indians and where Christopher Columbus landed in 1494.

For fun and frolic, you decide if it will be horseback riding, scuba
diving, polo, tennis, jet-skiing or even visiting the casinos. No
problem in keeping touch back home, as there is access to several
internet cafes in the town. |
