Are there jobs available for spouses traveling to GB Cuba or Japan with Navy husband while he’s on final tour.

My soon to be husband is in the navy and would like me to go with him to either GB Cuba or Japan for his final tour of duty. I am concerned I won’t be able to find a job to cover my existing car payment and credit card bills and I don’t want him to support me. What type of work is available on the naval base in GB Cuba or the base and surrounding area in Japan?

Japan is easy: teach Conversational English, either in a class room setting(anywhere from their version of Kindergarden all the way up through College level) or as a private instructor. each base offers classes in getting started as well as leads. My GF made MORE money (including the exchange rate) than her O3 husband while in Yokosuka. On base, most jobs are held for Host Nationals, but there are some MWR jobs that you could get.

GITMO is more problematic, as you are NOT allowed off base jobs. on base would be scarce. Additionally, a large part of GITMO’s contingent are on UNacompanied orders. if your soon to be spouse will be part of the Detainee Ops, you will not be allowed to go with him.

additionally, you would need to get his orders amended to Accompanied..which would add at minimum 12 months(3 year total tour if shore, up to 5 is sea duty) get Command sponsorship and pass an Overseas screening before you could go.

Other factors: you cannot bring a car to Japan..well you can, but it is HIGHLY discouraged as the cost to convert to their emissions standards is ginormous. plus you need to get permission from the people holding title to take the car out of the country. not to mention that only ONE car per orders will be shipped at gov’t expense. if it is a large car..well,. frankly, it wouldn’t fit on Japan’s extremely narrow roads.

That being said, LOVED Yoko. did three years there and miss it terribly.
