The
Coyaba River Garden is located on the site of an ancient Arawak
village. Coyaba is named after the Arawak word for paradise. You
will find at Coyaba the serenity of a genuine water garden fed by
streams that rise naturally from the property, fine Jamaican Spanish
architecture. This paradise is made accessible by walkways and foot-bridges
that cross over cascading streams past natural aquarium filled with
koi carp, mullet, snappers and turtles.
Each visit to Coyaba is a fresh encounter with nature and beauty.
The seasons are evidenced by newly flowering plants and trees. Much
can be learned of Jamaican history by visiting the museum at the
garden. There is also a small art galley of local art and a gift
shop and a recording studio. For want of entertainment check out
the moonshine festival with calypso music, jonkunno masquerades,
fire and limbo dancers. Helpful and informed guides will be happy
to answer and questions you may have.
Shaw Park Garden is situated on a hilltop. The 25 acres of tropical
splendour commands the view of the of the Ocho Rios Bay and the
azure waters of the Caribbean Sea. Originally the area was an estate
name after Elizabeth, Ann and John Shaw who were owners up to 1811.
This botanical garden shows off the island flora in an artful formation.
The many trees and flowering shrubs such as hibiscus, bougainvillea
and oleander compete with the many species of ferns (It's said that
a cutting from the garden's Jamaican sword fern was taken to Boston
in 1793 and crossbred to yield the Boston fern). There is a sparkling
waterfall which plunges down a rocky path with exquisite plant specimen
on all sides.
The gardens are open daily 8am - 5pm.
