What to see/do while in NYC for first time? Mayberry, NC meets NYC (staying Friday AM – Monday AM mid July)?
3 generations staying in Jersey City. 7 and 10 yr old girls with mom and dad, and grandmother and grandfather. Grandmother loves shopping. Disabled Grandfather is an old fasion, Veitnam vet, who’s not traveled since Nam, but wants to see NYC. Dad’s the tour guide and the requests (in order)are:
1) Ground zero
2) Empire state building
3) the best pasty/cheesecake in NYC
4) Time Square
5) Lady Liberty (This is the one I don’t want to screw up for them; any helpful suggestions on this would be great)
6) Central Park (we plan to pack a lunch and let the kids play)
7) We want to try good ol’ family run NYC resturants.. authentic NYC food (all kinds)
With 4 females, chocolate is a must! (help a dad out ladies)
Any other ideas? …a good tour bus one morning maybe?
Take the path train from Jersey city to The WTC site . Right across the street from it is one of the best stores in the city .Century 21 sells designer stuff at a discount. You can then take the subway up to the Empire State Building . Let the ladies stop at Macy’s and H & M for some shopping. The best cheese cake in NYC is at D’Auito’s bakery on 8th Ave between 30 & 31 st. No seats but good coffee.
Then you can take a lesurely stroll up to Times Square only about 10 blocks. Near Times Square is a resturant on 9th Ave and 52 st called Manga e Breva, good Italian food reasonable prices. Also in Times Square on 42 st near 8th ave is a place called Dallas BBQ cheap prices and good food, there are a few Dallas BBQ in the city. If you really want Jr’s cheescake there is a Junior’s just like the bklyn one on 44 st tween 7th & 8th Ave.
For Lady Liberty look into taking a ferry from Liberty State Park to the Statue and Ellis Island. For a museum that is very kid oriented check out Liberty Science center Great views of the city from Liberty State Park. For more info do a google search or ask at your hotel.
On the West side of Central Park at 80st is the Museum of Natural History on the other side of the park is the Metropolitan Museum of Art at around 82 st (admission is a suggested donation, ignore the prices and give what you wish) BTW there is a really good playground at 77st and Columbus ave. Central Park also has a Carousel and a nice little zoo.
Don’t try to plan every minute leave some time for just wandering around.
A couple of tips Most Important COMFORTABLE SHOES!!!! are an absolute must!!!!!!!
5th ave divides the addresses from east and west 40 E 32 st is east of 5th, 30 W 32 is west of 5th. Generally even numbered streets run east bound odd numbered streets run westbound, even numbered Aves go north odd numbered Aves go south.
if you aren’t sure if you’re headed in the right direction just ask someone. We love tourists here.
Enjoy and Have a Good Time.
